The Pit

Before the shelters were erected the ground had to be dug down 3 feet to accommodate them. This could have been a hard job or a very hard job depending on the soil. The soil in Kent for example is hard, chalky soil full of clay. If the designated area for the pit was below the natural water table, then the shelter would be prone to flooding regularly.
