Biggin Hill 'Welcome' signs

Background

To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, and Biggin Hill's part in it, it was decided by the 'Biggin Hill and District Resident's Association' to erect five 'Welcome' signs on the five main roads into village. These would remind visitors of the links between the RAF and Biggin Hill since 1917 until it left in 1992. They show both the Biggin Hill sign and the RAF Crest and a reminder of the dates the RAF were here.

The five signs were designed and constructed by 'T. J. Recycled Materials' using reclaimed timber. Details can be found in the 'Construction' section.

The unveiling ceremony took place in October 2010 by the sign outside the Biggin Hill Airport entrance. Two veteran RAF pilots from the second world war were on hand to perform the unveiling.

They were Former Flight Lieutenant Rodney Scrase DFC, who flew Spitfires from Biggin Hill with 611 Squadron in 1944; and former Flight Sergeant Harry Hitchens, who flew Hurricanes from bases in Lincolnshire in 1944.
